5 Days Exploring ‘Wednesday’ Filming Locations in Romania

From 'Jericho' to 'Nevermore Academy': An adventure to die for!

From castles straight out of a romantic nightmare to medieval towns brought to life like the eccentric Jericho, Romania has become an unexpected sanctuary for ‘Wednesday’ fans, the Netflix series directed by Tim Burton.

We’ve put together a 5-day itinerary for a frightfully good time!!

Day 1: A Gothic Welcome to Bucharest.

Your journey begins in Romania’s vibrant capital, Bucharest, where past and present come together in the perfect setting for a gothic tale.

From the moment you land at Henri Coandă Airport, you’ll feel that slightly decadent charm typical of the grand cities of Eastern Europe.

🏨 Where to stay: The Marmorosch Hotel is an Art Deco gem with interiors that feel straight out of a period film, an ideal place to set the mood!

And the Epoque Hotel is also a charming choice!!

But, of course, Bucharest offers a wide variety of hotels and accommodations, so you’re sure to find the one that suits you best!

💡 What to do:

  • Take a guided walk through Bucharest’s Old Town, filled with neoclassical facades, narrow alleyways, and a slightly eerie atmosphere.
  • Have dinner at Caru’ cu Bere, a century-old restaurant that was used in several interior scenes of the series.
  • In the evening, a themed cocktail at Joben Bistro, a steampunk-style bar that could easily be a favorite hangout for Nevermore Academy students.

Day 2: Behind the Scenes in Bucharest and Nevermore Academy, Cantacuzino Castle.

Two hours north of Bucharest lies the true heart of the ‘Wednesday‘ universe: Cantacuzino Castle, in the mountain town of Bușteni.

This early 20th-century palace, overlooking the Bucegi Mountains, was transformed into the imposing Nevermore Academy. Its Neo-Romanian architecture, stained glass windows, and stone corridors were masterfully used by the production team to create one of the series’ most iconic settings.

While you’re in Bucharest, don’t miss these iconic ‘Wednesday’ filming locations:

  • Polytechnic University of Bucharest: some of the exterior campus scenes were shot here.
  • Botanical Garden: used for outdoor scenes at Nevermore, especially Wednesday’s walks with Eugene.
  • Monteoru House: an elegant mansion used for interior shots.

💡 What to do:

  • Join a specialized guided tour of the filming locations and visit 6 spots, including Cantacuzino Castle.
  • Don’t hesitate and put on your Wednesday Addams outfit and take the best photos ever. Can you think of a better souvenir?
  • Bonus: In summer, classical music concerts are held in the castle gardens, a truly Burtonesque experience. We recommend checking with the castle in advance to confirm dates.

Day 3: Transylvania: From Brașov to Dracula’s Castle.

Dive into Transylvania today, a land of legends, castles, and alleys seemingly frozen in time.

Option 1. Departure from Brașov.

Brașov, one of the most beautiful cities in the country, offers a perfect blend of history, mysticism, and gothic elegance.

The Brașov Citadel and the imposing Black Church, whose towers and stained glass windows could easily be part of any ‘Wednesday’ scene.

Don’t forget to stroll through Council Square and enjoy a trendy café with mountain views.

From Brașov, you can join this tour that follows the route of Transylvania’s most beautiful and spooky castles!

🔗 You can book the ‘Wednesday‘ & Dracula Castles tour here.

The iconic Bran Castle, known as the inspiration for Dracula’s castle, is a must-visit in this area!

Although it wasn’t a direct filming location for the series, its gothic aesthetics and connection to Dracula will leave you speechless!

Option 2. Brașov, Dracula Castle, and Peles Castle departing from Bucharest.

If on the first day you took the tour of the main filming locations, you’ve probably already visited Cantacuzino Castle, what we like to call Nevermore Academy!! 😊

So maybe you’d prefer to join this tour departing from Bucharest:

Day 4: The Town of Jericho.

Although it may seem unbelievable, the town is a set, but its surroundings are real, as the buildings were constructed outdoors by the Colentina River.

The fictional town of Jericho was entirely built at the Buftea Studios, located near Bucharest. This set included buildings such as the Weathervane café, the town hall, the church, and other facades inspired by New England architecture, recreating the atmosphere of the American town where part of the story takes place.

Buftea Studios are known as the Hollywood of Romania and can be visited, although they are not permanently open to the general public. If you’re interested in visiting, we recommend checking their official website.

Optional stop: Brănești Lake, where the Nevermore Academy boat race was filmed!

Day 5: Farewell to Bucharest. See you soon, Nevermore!

A great day for shopping:

  • Independent bookstores where you’ll find books on dark art and gothic novels, like Cărturești Carusel.
  • Local designer shops offering pieces that blend contemporary style with the “dark academia” vibe.
  • In the evening, you can end your day with dinner at an elegant rooftop restaurant overlooking the Palace of the Parliament.

A perfect closing raising a glass of Romanian wine under the city lights!

We hope your suitcase is full of magical memories!
