LA PALLICE (La Rochelle): Nazi U-Boat Pens in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg wanted fiction and reality to become as intertwined as possible. The film shows the Nazis making use of La Pallice U-Boat Pens, at the commercial port of La Rochelle. And this actually happened!
La Pallice submarine base was built in secret by the Germans during World War II to hauled up and repair submarines on the Atlantic coast of France. The concrete behemoths structures (used in the Indiana Jones filming) are visible from La Rochelle’s harbour, but nowadays they have no military use.
