ALCAZABA OF ALMERÍA: The Water Gardens of Dorne.
Yes, the scenes set in Dorne in season five were shot in Seville, but in season six Dorne locations travelled south to Almería.
Specifically to The Alcazaba, the largest Moorish fortress in Spain protected by the impressive walls known as the Murallas de Cerro de San Cristóbal. Its Muslim arquitecture and its lush gardens were, once again, perfect to fit the culture of House Martell.

The Alcazaba was the location for the bloody scene where Ellaria Sand takes over House Martell by killing Doran Martell, the Prince of Dorne.
If you want to know more about how to journey deeper into Dorne through the Alcazaba, we tell you all the details in the ‘Activities’ section!
EL CHORRILLO (Pechina): Vaes Dothrak.
Only half an hour away driving to the north from Almeria we encounter a filming outdoors set known as El Chorrillo.
It is located in the foothills of Sierra Alhamilla in the municipality of Pechina and its mud houses have been used in several films including Exodus by Ridley Scott.
Its rambling and narrow streets covered with dust turned into Vaes Dothrak, a Dothraki settlement. Daenerys Targaryen was kept captive here in season six.

A huge wooden hut was built from scratch as the temple of Vaes Dothraki. A round building that turned to ashes when Daenerys was rescued. ¡Dracarys!
MESA ROLDÁN TOWER: The Second Siege of Meereen.
The rivalry between Daenerys Targaryen and the slave owners of Meereen reached its peak in Mesa Roldán Tower. Located in Cabo de Gata Natural Park, about one hour driving from Almería.

At the bottom of this watchtower overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Daenerys, Tyrion, Grey Warm and Missandei negotiate the surrender of the slave owners.
There is a moment in the scene when Drogo flies over the tower making Daenerys point immediately more… convincing.
GYPSUM QUARRY (Sorbas): Doors of Meereen.
Near the town of Sorbas, only 40 minutes by car away from Mesa Roldán Tower and 50 minutes away from the city of Almería, there is a particular qypsum quarry in the ‘Majadas Viejas’ Quarry.
This huge quarry was digitally transformed into the Doors of Meereen.

Only the technical team worked in this location and the quarry only appears a few seconds on screen.
But if you travelled to Sorbas you can visit the quarry and imagine there the huge harpy sculptures that guard the entrance of Meereen.
RAMBLA DEL BÚHO (Tabernas Desert): The path to Vaes Dothrak.
Our journey ends in the most famous film set in Almería: the Tabernas Desert, only 50 kilometres to the north from the city of Almería.
Its rocky plains and canyons have been used in several films, mainly in Spaghetti Western movies and big productions. Some of them are Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the GOT universe this landscape was Dothraki territory.

The filming took place mainly in the desert gorges of Rambla del Búho, inside of Paraje de la Tortuga. Along its dusty routes walked Daenerys, Jorah Mormont, Daario Naharis and hundreds and hundreds of Dothraki people. Two huge horse statues were digitally added to this landscape to mark the entrance to Vaes Dothraki.
Do you want to ride a horse through these desert landscapes and be a true Dothraki? Click on the ‘Activities’ link and you will find more information about how you can live in Tabernas Desert an unforgettable experience.
